History

Continuous growth

Jalema History BuildingWhat was started in the nineteen twenties by Jan, Leendert and Machiel (Ja-Le-Ma) Klopman as a small factory in the Dutch town of Koog aan de Zaan, has since grown into a major, successful and fully-fledged family business. In 1947, father and son Westendorff took over Jalema and established in the Limburg town of Steyl. Here, the production of letter holders, filing bags, plastic folders, and related office supplies. Pretty soon, the accommodation proved too small and, in 1952, Jalema moved to Reuver.

Success

Jalema Suspension PointThe real breakthrough took place in the late nineteen fifties when the idea emerged to design and produce branch-oriented filing systems based on a unique invention: the lateral suspended file - suspended from a single suspension point. The Dutch hospitals were the first to collectively switch over to the Jalema system. The graphics industry followed. Today, with by now the third generation of Westendorff at the helm, Jalema is still conquering new branches with clever and user-oriented products.

Takeover Avanti and Atlanta

At Jalema, we believe very strongly in innovation and continuous development. In 2010, we took over two companies.

Late April, we took over the German folder manufacturer Avanti GmbH (plastic folders), followed, in October, by the company Atlanta. Jalema bought Atlanta’s factory in Reuver – where they produced plastic injection moulded articles (such as paper trays and other desk-top accessories) – and from the Atlanta factory in Hoogezand we purchased all machines to produce a range of products including work files, suspension files and business forms.
